Members and allies of the Philippine Federation of the Deaf (PFD) stage a protest rally at Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila on Friday.
They are calling on Commission on the Filipino Language (CFL) Chairman Arthur Casanova and other newly-appointed commissioners to keep the CFL’s Filipino Sign Language (FSL) unit and stop ousting its personnel.
According to the PFD members, the move to abolish the FSL unit will deprive deaf Filipinos of their language rights and violate the mandate of Republic Act No. 7104, or the Commission on the Filipino Language Act, which aims to develop, propagate, and preserve Filipino and other Philippine languages.
