Double Win for Benilde Deaf Associates at FSL Poetry Contest

CEAD congratulates two of our Deaf colleagues who won in the literary contest organized by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino in celebration of Buwan ng Panitikan this April.

Shaquille De Guzman, former CEAD staff and now with SDEAS, won first place for his FSL entry “Isang Puso ng Pagganyak” (A Heart of Motivation).

Former DTT Trainor and currently SDEAS faculty Yvette Apurado took home third place for “Kapayapaan para sa mga Pilipino” (Peace for Filipinos).

CEAD advances Deaf academic success by making FSL literature, such as FSL poetry, a part of Deaf education. This means including FSL poetry among the FSL learning materials developed by the CEAD Deaf Heritage and Deaf Life Stories project.

Through FSL Poetry, Deaf individuals can express their unique identity, culture, and experience. It is also a way for them to learn FSL grammar, syntax and idioms as it demonstrates a complex visual language that enables the Deaf to communicate. In addition, FSL poetry provides Deaf children with work that represents their voice and affirms their worth as individuals and as part of a community whose narrative must be protected, nurtured and celebrated.

CEAD applauds KWF, particularly their commissioners and their FSL unit team, for promoting FSL poetry in its contest and championing and preserving Filipino Deaf literature in their work.

The awarding ceremony was held on April 17, 2024, at the Sheraton Manila Hotel, Pasay City. Joining the winners were Dx. Rafa Domingo, CEAD Unit Head of Deaf Heritage and Filipino Sign Language Studies and Maricris Galang, Team Leader of Deaf Heritage and Deaf Life Stories project.
